It feels like these kinds of movies do exist still but are exclusive to streaming release only. In a way, this bifurcation where something like Shotgun Wedding gets only a streaming release and more cinematic films like MI: Dead Reckoning are reserved for the theater makes sense to me in the streaming age.

Do you think this kind of model is still insufficient? If a movie like Plane was released today, is there a better case for it to be released in theater than on a streaming platform where the barrier to watch is lower?

Thought provoking question from a streaming QUEEN! My knee jerk reaction is that I always want theatrical release, because of personal bias but also because I still believe that that’s where the cultural conversation lives (lol don’t call me out on this). My more nuanced reaction is that I actually cut a paragraph about how some (not all lol!!) streamers have tried to co-opt mid movies by taking their parts and jazzing them up with massive budgets (red notice is a particularly brutal example). I think it’s disingenuous— trying to stamp out a middle tier market without actually caring about any of the parts that make it great. All to say, I worry that the bifurcation doesn’t ultimately help the longevity of this mid tier, just contributes to forces that accelerate its extinction… 😬
